Ecrio Inc. Releases Ecrio Communication Gateway

A Bridge between major Instant Messaging Services and SMS & WAP phones

Cupertino, California - September 24, 2001 — Ecrio Inc., a leading provider of advanced wireless messaging applications and infrastructure, announced the release of the Ecrio™ Communication Gateway (ECG). The ECG is a carrier-grade server enabling interoperability between short messaging service (SMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP™) and instant messaging (IM) services.

The ECG sits in an operator's network and acts as a bridge with other messaging services, promoting revenue-generating traffic and reducing customer churn. Subscribers can use a wide range of devices--mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and personal computers--over any network worldwide exchange SMS and instant messages with their Yahoo!™, MSN®, AOL™, and ICQ™ Pals. Users have complete control over their presence and availability. They determine when they are seen as on or offline, and can inform their Pals if they are available, out to lunch, or in a meeting.

"Reducing customer churn, driving up network traffic, and increasing revenue is more important than ever." said Nagesh Challa, president and CEO of Ecrio. "Operators are looking for ways to increase revenue with existing infrastructure, until they have fully deployed their GPRS and UMTS networks. The ECG is geared for today's 2G networks; it can be installed into any digital network without requiring changes in handsets and user behavior. The ECG enhances a provider's messaging offering and extends its reach to the hundreds of millions of worldwide messaging users. It provides an easy and fast approach to generate additional revenues and to gradually introduce value-added services to the public."
